There are a lot of exciting things happening here at Hope House Center!
We are always looking for ways to reach out to our community and to expand knowledge of situational issues that are not always manageable. There seemingly looms a misunderstanding of what homelessness is and how it comes about.
National statistics for 2021 are eye opening:
• The average life expectancy of a homeless person is 50 years
• 61% of homeless persons are men and boys
• 20% of homeless persons are KIDS
• Permanent housing interventions have grown by 450% in 5 years
• .2% of Americans are homeless; that leaves 99.8% to help
• 58,000 students identify as homeless in the United States
• 38.6% of homeless are disabled
• 25% of homeless people have mental illness
• SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND HOMELESS: 38% drug abuse & 26% alcohol
• READ THAT AGAIN!
We have this preconceived notion that all homeless are addicts; this is not the case. Hope House is striving to educate not only adults about the homeless population, but the youth as well. WE have collaborated with a local artist to write and illustrate a children’s book series about awareness and compassion. The book has been written and is being illustrated as we speak. We are so excited to share this with you! Please stay tuned for more information.
